SCORES is a Youth Development Hat Trick
Being part of a year-round soccer team gives kids a sense of belonging and provides them abundant opportunities to be physically active and socially engaged. Poet-athletes proudly sport their SCORES jerseys and represent their schools on weekly game days. Soccer practices integrate nutrition, skill development, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
A boy discovers his voice: The story of Anthony Spears Jr.
As a child, Anthony was extremely shy and didn't speak to anyone other than his family. Everything changed with America SCORES. "Almost immediately after joining the SCORES program, he started opening up," his father says. Check out Anothony's story at the link above.
Teamwork underscores all SCORES programs. It’s the glue. Teamwork on the field translates to success in the classroom and measurable impact in the community.
During the Fall season, SCORES teams meet with their writing coaches for writing workshops. Students unleash their voices, sharing personal stories, creating original works of poetry, and learning new, creative means to express themselves.
Where I’m From
By Alexis Orozco | Paul Revere Elementary
I am from the Mexican culture.
I am from the sweet corn tamales.
I am from the sweet papayas.
I am from all the Mexican smells.
I am from dancing puppets.
I am from fresh cut peaches.
I am from red, white, and green.
I am from Paul Revere.
I am from a black and white ball.

Love is the feeling inside your heart.
When you are around your family or friends.
It is like biting into a sweet strawberry
Love is all on your heart
Your heart is what keeps you flowing in the day.
Having someone to love
So you will have someone to count on
When you are having a problem
Come Spring, SCORES poet-athletes become agents of change in their own communities, diving into research around local needs and identifying a challenge to address through community service as a team. It’s pure service learning, with students leading every step of the way.
Moscone Elementary students spent time with senior citizens, discovering commonalities and differences, creating connections through conversation and play.
Redding Elementary students collected donations to create needed hygiene kits for the homeless
Bret Harte Elementary students emphasized the value of good nutrition, targeting “food deserts” in their neighborhood by leading vegetable and fruit food drives.
SCORES is a robust community of vibrant, optimistic children and engaged, caring adults. Our student-athletes receive the transformative opportunities and support that might otherwise be unaccessible to them. In turn, they energetically give back to their communities in creative and meaningful ways through a semester-long service learning program. Check out some of the recent issues tackled by SCORES teams on the Instagram feed below.
