In San Francisco, Girls Rule Soccer and Poetry

On a soccer field in San Francisco, the ones who kick hard are the girls. They make up the summer camp organized by America Scores Bay Area, an after-school program that supports the comprehensive development of children through soccer.

In this camp called Selecta, the objective is for the girls to spend their free time on the courts during the holidays.

Amber Calderón Bugarín is the director of the program and is in charge of this important mission "I [them] teach how to play soccer, also how to make movements, and topics of nutrition and the history of athletes," she commented.

His experience as a soccer player has taught him the importance of female role models for the new generations, which is why this team closely follows the World Cup.

“The World Cup is very important, especially for the girls, because our saying is 'if you can see it, you can be it' so they have a lot of inspiration to be players, maybe, I hope so, in the World Cup in the future,” Calderón said. .

And along with their physical skills, in these little ones, so does their confidence.

“It teaches that it doesn't matter if you are a woman or a man, that you can play and win,” said Maya Gallardo, who participated in the summer camp.

Isabella Gómez also participated and commented on how this program has strengthened her self-confidence: “Kids at my school say things like 'You can't because you're a girl' and when I score the goal and they look, they're like 'uhh He said with a small smile.

And although anyone could say that soccer has nothing to do with poetry, the passion that these girls experience on the field inspires great verses

“Football is family,

I can see the spirit of soccer

like an eagle flying with the ball.

Soccer fills me with joy

when i play with my friends

Without my family who supports me,

I couldn't make a happy dream come true."

Training athletes and poets is another of America Scores' key programs.

“[The program] helps children describe how it feels on paper or words and also with soccer they can explain how it feels on the pitch,” Calderón said.
