SFUSD Arts Director

Ron Machado didn’t initially plan on a career in education but has managed to craft a steady and comprehensive climb through SFUSD since 2001, working as a fourth-grade teacher at Visitacion Valley; an instructional reform facilitator at Malcolm X Academy, where his work involved coaching teachers; and as a principal at both Miraloma Elementary (eight years) and Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy(five years.) Today he serves as Director of the Arts Department for all of SFUSD, overseeing arts programming in dance music, theatre, visual arts, and media arts for more than 50,000 students. He joined the SCORES board in 2023.

Ron grew up in Grass Valley/Nevada City and attended Butte Community College before finishing his BA in Chico. His path toward education began with a teacher’s credential from Chico State and culminated with a master’s degree in education from the Principal Leadership Institute at UC Berkeley.

A father of three, Ron often surprises people with his avid pursuit of skateboarding. He’s currently building a cement skateboarding bowl in his backyard.
