Freddy Segoviano

Program Manager - Oakland

Freddy Segoviano was born and raised in East Oakland, where family, neighbors, and local schools shaped his sense of belonging. His parents immigrated from Mexico—his father from the state of Jalisco, and his mother from Turicato, a small town in Michoacán—bringing with them traditions and stories that continue to guide how Freddy approaches his work and community.

Freddy began working with youth right after high school, joining BACR at Global Family Elementary in Oakland. For seven years, he taught after-school programs for first through fifth graders, discovering the satisfaction of helping students grow academically and personally. There, he met Coach Kevin Calderon (now a SCORES program director), who introduced him to SCORES. The program’s distinct blend of soccer and poetry immediately clicked: “I thought, ‘Okay, I like both those things, let’s do it,’” Freddy recalls.

Today, as Oakland Program Manager, Freddy oversees programming at 32 schools alongside a team of coordinators. While he ensures everything runs smoothly, he loves the time he spends directly with students, watching them gain confidence on the field and through their writing.

Poetry has long been part of Freddy’s life. He carried a journal everywhere in high school, capturing ideas and emotions between classes. Outside of work, he enjoys adventurous bike rides, playing pickup soccer with his younger brother, and sampling adventurous foods on visits to Mexico.
